About A Midsummer Nights Dream:
Summary
A forest. A pact. A tryst. Another tryst.
Some rude mechanicals. Mischeivous fairies. An ass.
Shakespeare’s most adored and magical comedy is instantly
recognisable with the fewest of details and always brings a smile to people’s faces.
Whether it’s the fairies, Bottom and Peter Quince, the lovers’ haps and mishaps or the astonishing poetry, this is a play most of us know in one form or other. A number of stories coalesce – young Athenian lovers get into a tangle because of the sparring between the King and Queen of the Fairies, and a troop of craftsmen prepare a show for the upcoming nuptials of the Athenian King and Amazonian Queen.
This great celebration of love, passion and marriage is riotous, fraught and delightful in turns.
With the STC Actors Company, Cheek by Jowl’s Edward Dick will create a joyful, visceral and sexy Dream: sensual, not at all cosy, reeking of sweat and desire.
‘Jack shall have Jill;
Naught shall go ill.
The man shall have his mare again, and all will be well.’
